Gendarmerie (old military post)

Historic site and monument, Military Patrimony, Abbot's residence (Commanderie) in Bourail
  • Built during the penitentiary era, the former military post, now the gendarmerie, bears witness to Bourail's colonial past.

  • Bourail's current gendarmerie was, in the penitentiary era, a military post housing soldiers of the Infanterie de Marine. The building was first constructed in wood by the prison administration in 1868, before being rebuilt in stone in the 1880s. The gendarmerie moved in on May 8, 1888.
