Japan eases its travel advisory for New Caledonia

Japan has officially eased its travel advisory for New Caledonia as of Wednesday, 2 July — following similar moves by Australia and New Zealand — sending a strong signal of renewed confidence in the destination.

Published on 2 July 2025

On 2 July, the Japanese government downgraded its travel alert for New Caledonia from Level 2 to Level 1 for the West Coast of the main island (from Nouméa to Koné) and Lifou Island, reflecting improved conditions in these areas.

Improved safety conditions

A relative improvement in safety has been observed along part of the West Coast of Grande Terre (from Nouméa to Koné) and on Lifou Island, allowing the alert level to be reduced to 1, while continuing to exercise caution,

stated Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This renewed confidence marks a positive step toward restoring New Caledonia’s image in one of its historic tourism markets, greatly supporting the ongoing efforts of New Caledonia Tourism to maintain engagement with both trade partners and the travelling public.
