The GR® Nord hiking trail

The GR® Nord, a long-distance hiking trail in New Caledonia’s Northern Province, stretches over 86 km and passes through the municipalities of Ponérihouen, Poindimié, and Touho. Designed to be completed in five days, with one stage per day, the route takes you through serene valleys and verdant rainforests. Along the way, it winds through tribal lands, lush vegetation, fields, banana plantations, and coffee farms.

Each evening, refuges managed by local tribes welcome hikers, offering a unique opportunity to engage in Kanak customs and traditions.

Hiking the GR® Nord

A Unique Adventure in New Caledonia

The GR® hikes are challenging, particularly due to the length of each stage (between 5 and 7 hours of walking per day on the GR® Nord), the varied altitudes, and the remote nature of the trail. The reward? You’ll be trekking through rarely-visited, untouched landscapes. The GR® Nord route is divided into five stages, stretching from the Ponérihouen Valley to the narrow Tewadé (Tiouandé) Plain, near Hienghène. The trail passes through the Câba (Tchamba), Amoa, Tiwaka, Tiwae, and Paola (Poyes) valleys, covering a total of 88 km.

A distinctive feature of the GR® Nord:

Its immersion in Kanak culture, with opportunities to be guided by locals and spend the night in a traditional tribal hut. What’s more, this is an itinerant walk, meaning you don’t need to carry food along the way.

Hiking the GR® Nord with a guide

The GR® trails are free and well-signposted, allowing you to hike independently if you prefer. However, to truly enrich your experience, it’s highly recommended to be accompanied by a French-speaking guide. Not only can they help you engage with the local Kanak communities, but they can also introduce you to the unique fauna and flora that make New Caledonia so special.

From dogfish and green pigeons to notus and wild pigs, the island’s diverse wildlife is easier to spot with the keen eyes of a knowledgeable guide. The GR® Nord guides are trained to connect hikers with local culture, offering opportunities to stay overnight in tribal huts and share in the traditions of Kanak hospitality. Letting a specialist guide you transforms the trek into a deeper journey of discovery, blending natural beauty with cultural immersion.
