Air Calédonie domestic flightAs of 2 March 2026, all domestic flights in New Caledonia have been consolidated at La Tontouta International Airport, located approximately 45 minutes from Nouméa, replacing Magenta Airport.
Upon arrival in New Caledonia, international travellers can now continue their journey to the Loyalty Islands (Lifou, Maré, Ouvéa) and the Isle of Pines without transferring into Nouméa, thanks to simplified connections between international and domestic flights at La Tontouta Airport.
With its longer runway and reduced exposure to weather conditions, La Tontouta International Airport is expected to support improved flight regularity for domestic air services. The international terminal has also been reorganised to offer new services designed to enhance the overall travel experience.
Domestic flights continue to be operated by the local airline Air Calédonie, with an average flight time of around 40 minutes between Nouméa and the Loyalty Islands or the Isle of Pines. Flight schedules have been expanded to facilitate international connections at La Tontouta Airport.
Itineraries combining international and domestic flights in New Caledonia can be booked through travel agencies and usual booking partners, as well as via Aircalin, New Caledonia’s international airline, as part of its partnership with Air Calédonie.
Tickets for domestic-only journeys can be booked directly on the Air Calédonie website.
The transfer of domestic flights to La Tontouta Airport is accompanied by a new airport organisation.
Domestic flights are currently handled in dedicated temporary areas, with departures following the same route as international passengers. The separation of international and domestic passenger flows at La Tontouta International Airport is scheduled to be completed by mid-2026.
New services have also been introduced for travellers using La Tontouta Airport, including:
This change in the organisation of local air services in New Caledonia has led to opposition from part of the population, which may result in temporary disruptions, such as short-term closures of island airfields.
Passengers are informed directly by Air Calédonie in the event of any operational changes affecting domestic flights. Travellers are advised to consult real-time updates on the La Tontouta Airport website or on the airline’s website prior to departure.
