Step 2: Mwä Kââ and New Caledonia Museum - 6 minutes' walk
Discover the rich Kanak culture and its history in the Museum of New Caledonia, which offers the most beautiful collection of Kanak art anywhere in the world. However, as the museum is closed while being extended, a stop in front of the symbolic and spectacular Mwâ Kââ, a carved 12 m post located in front of the museum, is essential.
Location: 6 rue Auguste Brun and 45 avenue Foch

Step 3: Arte Bello Gallery - 6 minutes' walk
Located for more than twenty years in the heart of the Quartier Latin (Latin Quarter), this gallery of over 300 m2 is a must see for contemporary local art. Its exhibition spaces use a play of light to enhance the wide range of paintings, ceramics and engravings of the artists on sale.
    Location: 30 rue Auguste Brun

Step 4: Saint Joseph Cathedral - 8 minutes' walk
Built by penal colony prisoners and classified as a historical monument, Saint Joseph's Cathedral overlooks the entire city centre of Nouméa and the panorama from its heights is superb.
    Location: 3 rue Frédéric Surleau

Step 5: Bernheim Library - 2 minutes' walk
This colonial-style building was built in Paris to house the New Caledonia Pavilion at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The building was then repatriated to Nouméa and transformed into a public library. The library is closed since 2022 and will be replaced by a more modern building in a few years.
Location: 41 avenue du Maréchal Foch

Step 6: Musée de la Ville (City Museum) - 6 minutes' walk
At the heart of the city centre stands a splendid colonial house that was once home to the main bank and was then the town hall of Nouméa. Since converted into a museum, this building retraces the history of the city and that of today's New Caledonia.
    Location: 39 rue Jean Jaurès

Step 7: Maison Higginson (Higginson House) - 5 minutes' walk
An artistic hub in the city centre, this colonial house was owned by John Higginson, founder of the Le Nickel company. Today open to the public, the building is dedicated to art and hosts temporary exhibitions and private collections.
    Location: 7 rue de Sébastopol

Location: Rue des accords de Matignon

Detour 2: Château Hagen - 6 minutes drive from the ferry terminal
Classified as a historical monument and located in one of the oldest districts of Nouméa, this splendid colonial building, surrounded by a beautiful ornamental park, offers a rich artistic and cultural programme throughout the year.
