The Grand Sud Lagoon is one of six lagoons designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008 for their incredible biodiversity. It takes the shape of a crescent, consisting of two distinct parts: the eastern section and the southern horn.
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 8, 2008, this maritime area boasts a rich and unique biodiversity, giving it unparalleled heritage significance and recognition.

With its red soils, winding trails for both short and long hikes, and remnants that reflect a rich cultural heritage, the Grand Sud region is also home to an exceptional and unique marine biodiversity hotspot!

THE GRAND SUD LAGOON

There is an astonishing variety of reefs within such a small area:

The eastern section includes a continental island reef alongside a coastal barrier reef.
The western section features complexes of lagoon and inner sea coral masses.
The water temperature here is lower than in other parts of New Caledonia:

The species found in these waters are more akin to those of New Zealand, including ascidians, sea urchins, sponges, and algae.
In contrast to the rest of the territory, the fish encountered resemble those in subtropical waters.
Yet this cooler temperature is ideal for humpback whales, making the Grand Sud Lagoon a breeding and mating ground. It also serves as a nesting habitat for 12 bird species, a nesting site for green turtles, and a habitat for white sharks!
