Built in1866, the Mission Church stands amidst abundant vegetation at the foot of the high coral rock that gave the tribe its name (Roche meaning rock in French).
The church was built in 1883, seventeen years after the creation of the mission founded by the Reverend Father Beaulieu (his grave is just behind the building). After a renovation in 2014, the bell tower was rebuilt with white walls pierced with stained glass windows. It is now topped with a wooden dome covered with decorated metal, which replaced the old four-sided roof which was painted red. In Maré, Catholics represent less than 20% of the population
