    ⏺︎ Step 2: Mwâ Kââ and the Museum of New Caledonia – 6 minutes on foot
    To discover the rich Kanak culture and history, the Museum of New Caledonia houses the world’s finest collection of Kanak art. Though the museum is currently closed for renovation, a stop in front of the symbolic and spectacular Mwâ Kââ—a 12-metre-tall carved pole—is a must.

    Located in the heart of the Latin Quarter for over twenty years, this 300 m² gallery is a must-see for local contemporary art. A clever use of lighting enhances the wide range of paintings, ceramics, and engravings available for purchase.

    ⏺︎ Step 4: Saint Joseph’s Cathedral – 8 minutes on foot
    Built by convicts and listed as a historical monument, Saint Joseph’s Cathedral towers over Nouméa’s city centre and offers a splendid panoramic view from above.

    ⏺︎ Step 5: Coconut Square (Place des Cocotiers) – 6 minutes on foot
    This emblematic square is a major cultural landmark in Nouméa. Approaching from Sébastopol Street, you first reach Place Feillet, known for its 19th-century bandstand. Further down is Place Courbet, with its shaded groves and popular pétanque areas. Continuing on, Place de la Marne features the iconic Céleste Fountain, a listed monument. Finally, at the lower end, Place de la Paix hosts a statue symbolising reconciliation. This route blends heritage, nature, and conviviality.

    ⏺︎ Step 6: City Museum – 6 minutes on foot
    In the heart of downtown stands a magnificent colonial house that once housed the main bank and later Nouméa’s city hall. Now converted into a museum, the building recounts the history of the city and, by extension, that of present-day New Caledonia.

    ⏺︎ Step 7: Higginson House – 5 minutes on foot
    This colonial house was the residence of John Higginson, founder of the Nickel Company (Le Nickel). Today, it serves as a key artistic venue in the city centre, hosting temporary exhibitions and private collections.

    ⏺︎ Step 8: Art Factory – Maison Cheval – 12 minutes on foot
    Set in a renovated historic monument, the Art Factory is a cultural hub in Nouméa. It houses a gallery, garden, terrace, and hosts exhibitions, concerts, shows, markets and workshops (drawing, sculpture, yoga, swing dancing…). On the ground floor, the Café-Expo is perfect for an artistic and tasty break.

    ⏺︎ Optional Detour 1: Tjibaou Cultural Centre – 16 minutes by car
    Facing the sea and the mangroves, the iconic Tjibaou Cultural Centre features modern architecture inspired by traditional Kanak huts. Its stunning gardens, exhibition halls and concert spaces host numerous shows and contemporary art pieces.

    ⏺︎ Optional Detour 2: Château Hagen – 6 minutes by car
    Listed as a historic monument and set in one of Nouméa’s oldest districts, this splendid colonial building is surrounded by a beautiful ornamental park and offers a rich cultural programme throughout the year.
