Are you planning a stopover in New Caledonia on your cruise, or are you already on the island? Discover our list of do’s and don’ts on the archipelago during your stopover.

Prepare for your trip!

Visit our website before you travel and then the Tourist Office once you arrive in Noumea for personalised advice on what to see and do.

Exchange currency

You can exchange currency at the Gare Maritime (ferry terminal).

Additionally, you can visit the N°1 Currency exchange office in downtown Nouméa, open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 4:45 pm, which accepts banknotes only. Before taking photographs of others, especially in tribal areas.

Relax on the beaches and islands

Make the most of New Caledonia’s capital, Noumea: relax on the beaches and islands by day and enjoy the bars and nightclubs in the evening.

Respect visited sites

Always respect the instructions of any sites or locations you’re visiting. New Caledonia is home to an ancestral culture and sacred sites.

Protect yourself from the sun

Don’t forget to protect yourself in the sun. Wearing a hat and sunscreen when outdoors is advised.

Please remember to use an environmentally-friendly sun cream to protect our beautiful lagoon during your swim.

Drive on the righthand side

Are you thinking of hiring a car for the time of your stopover to visit the city and its surroundings? Don’t forget that New Caledonians drive on the righthand side of the road!

The customary gestures

If visiting tribal areas, first request permission to enter the land by offering a token gift to the tribe’s Chief (Kanak custom). Find out more in our Kanak traditions page.

Don’t forget those around you

Do not stray from market paths and don’t jump queues.

Respect the environment

Respect New Caledonia’s natural environment. Do not damage or collect protected species such as coral, shells, plants and more.

Manage your rubbish

Help us keep New Caledonia clean. Please do not litter.

Do not take your own drinks...

To restaurants (no BYO) and no need to overload your plate. There is enough food for everyone.
