The only seaside tribe in the Bourail region, the Gouaro tribe is steeped in history and is one of the cradles of the region's Kanak legends.
The Gouaro tribe ("Dönêpê Rö Gëa' rhö" in Kanak) is part of the Ajië-Arho customary area, and is one of six tribes currently present in the Bourail region. It is the only one to be located by the sea, since it has access to the Baie de Gouaro, between the Baie des Amoureux and the Plage de Poé. There are many legends told by the tribe's elders, notably that of the bonhomme de Bourail, who is said to be responsible for welcoming the deceased into the other world after they have thrown themselves into the sea to take the passage leading to the realm of the dead. The Gouaro tribe is also a place steeped in history, having witnessed some of the events of the Kanak uprising of 1878.
Activities and tribal discovery days are sometimes organized throughout the year to enable visitors to discover the habits and customs of tribal life in the Bourail region.
Discovery days and other activities organized by the tribe generally require advance booking. For more information on upcoming events, please visit the Bourail Tourist Office website: https://www.sudtourisme.nc/decouverte/bourail/
