Nessadiou Arab cemetery

Historic site and monument, Historic patrimony, Civil cemetery in Bourail
  • The Arab cemetery reminds us of the importance of the Arab community in New Caledonia’s history.

  • The Arab cemetery in Nessadiou, a detached district of Bourail, bears witness to the great importance of the Arab community to New Caledonia and, more specifically, to the Bourail region. Almost 2,000 Algerian common law prisoners were transported here between 1864 and 1897. The cemetery was established in 1897 on land donated by Mr Miloud near the tomb of Marabout Sidi Moulay, who died in 1891, and next to the Nessadiou Cultural Centre, which also serves as a mosque.
