Round trip

This pleasant trail, quite sporty, leads to Houp Géant and crosses different types of environments (mining maquis, dense humid forest...). It presents many plants endemic to New Caledonia.

D Departure: from the car park, head south (GR® NC1 trail, double markings). Pass the information panel. Cross the creek (be careful, do not cross in rainy weather) and, at the fork, turn left. Climb up following the slippery red dirt track. At the intersection, turn right to cross the creek (pretty water hole) (be careful, do not cross in rainy weather). Follow the track to the next intersection.

1 Intersection (GPS: 675 272 – 7 549 626; alt. 251m): abandon the GR® NC1 and turn right to enter the forest (a few steps carved into the red earth make progress easier). Cross several creeks before reaching a junction indicated by a panel. The path on the left allows
to reach a stand of false walnut trees, a species endemic to New Caledonia.
2 Stand of false walnut trees (GPS: 674 907 – 7 549 398; alt. 333m) (the largest measures 9m in circumference): return to the main route. Climb the last steep path among the palm trees and exit the forest, then cross a short area of mining scrub to reach the highest point of the route.
3 Pass (GPS: 674 474 – 7 549 493; alt. 423m): descend on the flank to the west (a few columnar pines emerge from the scrub). At approximately 390m altitude, turn left to enter a small forest and cross a wooded thalweg. Go up on a shoulder, then turn right and
descend to reach the old well.
4 Former chrome exploration shaft (GPS: 674 302 – 7 549 469; alt. 391m) (it is visible on the edge of the path): continue and reach an intersection (GPS: 674 230 – 7 549 481; alt. 397m), then turn left towards the
Houp Géant following the level curve (the path, which runs straight ahead, joins a car park accessible by car and a picnic area with a table. Departure from the Houp Géant trail).
5 Houp Géant (GPS: 674 203 – 7 549 416; alt. 377m): continue straight ahead to reach the Araucaria.
6 Araucaria in the Houp (GPS: 674 178 – 7 549 352; alt. 397m): end of the route.
Follow the same route back.
